The Spessa Castle

Rooms | Services & activities | Other information

Situated on the gentle hills of the Collio, extending in an area of 60 hectares which includes the DOC Collio vineyards (30 hectares) and a park of century-old trees.
Its origins date back to the long-ago 13th century. Its long history of successions and noble lineages, distinguished people and daring guests - Giacomo Casanova among them (1773) - transfers of property and loving restorations has preserved the castle intact to our days, for us to admire in the pomp and splendour of the 1881 reconstruction. It changed into military hospital during World War I and has been restored in the 1930's.

With its rooms looking on the garden, which can host up to 120 people, the castle is the ideal location for outstanding events such as weddings, conventions, workshops and banquets.

The restaurant of the castle is reserved to big groups but at 100 mt. you find the high-quality restaurant "Tavernetta al Castello", entirely rebuilt on the site of the inn of the castle. It offers a beautiful view over the little lake in the centre of a large lawn. The chef's cuisine ranges from fresh fish from the Gulf of Trieste, meat and other dishes inspired by local traditions, everything accompanied by top quality wines.

Those gentle hills, their soil composition (soils formed by marls and sandy loams of Eocene origins), the peculiar climate (thanks to the protection offered in the north by the Julian Alps and the nearness of the Adriatic Sea), the favourable exposure and the skill of wine experts contribute to the success of the exquisite wines produced by the "Azienda Agricola Castello di Spessa, prized for its award-winning barrel-aged white wines and grappa.
The vinification cellar (with thermo-regulated stainless steel vats) is adjacent to the castle's original wine-cellar - with a brickwork pavement and vaulting in brick - which crosses the castle from east to west: here wine is fermented in barriques.
The aging cellar was created from a military bunker built in the mid Thirties, located under the courtyard opposite the castle.
Now it is connected to the old wine cellar by a tunnel which, going down 70 steps, has transformed the former refuge into a splendid, unique, inimitable cellar for aging.
