Italy has been an agricultural country for a long period and therefore
most of celebrations and festivals have got a peasant origin
which is lost in the mists of time when every single fact was marked
by pagan gods. Even if ancient customs and popular festivals have
inevitably lost part of their original and picturesque appearance,
they are still alive in modern Italy. Traditional festival are,
in fact, celebrated in most Italian towns and villages in
commemoration of local historical or religious events.
